As Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Popular Image Captures Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, describes the famous beach as her own backyard. On a recent Sunday evening, she, similar to other local residents, noticed loud noises ringing out across the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. She left her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display told her trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the avenue, speaking to a couple who had run up the slope soaked, she noticed someone moving up at her rear. The person was a beach patrol officer, dashing towards Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the path that the crowd was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and unshod … He’s running at something that undoubtedly every part of you would instruct you to run in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous acts of heroism in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, law enforcement and ambulance crews attending to numerous victims.

Community Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to come out of the community, with the patrol base next to the site of the incident becoming a makeshift treatment center. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including rushing into the ocean to assist people in distress.

After the attack, statements of gratitude flooded in. An online statement expressed thanks for the individuals who demonstrated that “goodness will always conquer darkness”.

The team of lifeguards published a communication, saying they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the kindness for our team,” the group stated. “In time, we will tell our tales in the belief that it supports those impacted.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many professional lifeguards, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the second the shooting started until late that night.

“We have heard so many powerful stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is incredible,” stated a mayor.

“These individuals show altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned coastlines protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on Sunday should be commended.

“While we mourn and grapple with the horror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much positivity we have observed in the midst of such darkness.”
