Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of unneeded presents might be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done the right way.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

The collection, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline remains to be announced, but the aim is to hold the auction before Christmas, with all funds raised benefiting a selection of charitable causes.

The items are said to be stored in a repository on the upper level of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni is also intending to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been stored away indefinitely.

A complete inventory is yet to be disclosed, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of items received was presented in parliament. The query focused on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A scarf from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Various other items including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Political Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, particularly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.

This charitable initiative symbolizes a novel approach to deal with the state presents that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
