Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

An recent term emerged a couple of months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from doctors like paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for physicians to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that atrocities are continuing. Officials has denied these allegations, just as it disavows everything it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, apparently, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that international journalists are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. An institution that once promoted harmony has transformed into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
