A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.

We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.

The initial step to check the location from which the images were from relied on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.

Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
