McLaren Points Finger at Rival Drivers for Piastri-Norris Collision

Tire detaches from McLaren after collision between team drivers

A racing wheel flies off the McLaren of Lando Norris after he crashed into team-mate Oscar Piastri at the start of the United States Grand Prix short race.

McLaren F1 team bosses Zak Brown and Andrea Stella pointed to competitors for the incident between Piastri and Lando Norris at the start of the US GP sprint event.

Piastri, ahead of Norris in the championship by twenty-two points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with the Hulkenberg.

The crash forced out both team drivers from the event, along with the Alonso, who was on the inside of the Sauber driver.

Team Executives Voice Frustration Over Incident

Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, commented to broadcasters that some of the driving at the front was "unprofessional", remarking: "Clearly Nico made contact with Oscar and he had no business being where he was."

McLaren F1 team principal Andrea Stella stated: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we were denied the opportunity to compete."

"It's surprising that some drivers with a lot of experience don't act with justful prudence. Go to the initial turn, make sure you avoid harming other drivers and continue."

The team indicated that Stella was pointing to both the Sauber driver and the Aston Martin driver.

Differing Perspectives on the Incident

However, former champion Damon Hill, providing analysis for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he believed Piastri had not demonstrated enough understanding of the dangers of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.

The Australian had a better start than Norris and at first competed on the outside on the ascending entry to the corner.

But he then cut back in an attempt to get a advantage on his teammate on the exit, only to hit the Sauber driver.

Racer Comments After the Incident

Piastri said: "Not ideal but I did not see what happened, I attempted to cut back on Norris and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then got a hit and it propelled me into Norris. A shame."

Norris said: "I just got hit, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back events unfolded and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers behind just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I thought I was in the right place on the inside, but some cars came very fast from the outside switching back and then I was there in the middle."

Hulkenberg, who had earned a season-best fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the good work from the previous day in the trash. Just messy."

"Oscar turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the undercut and way out of the first corner but I can't just disappear."

"I had Alonso attack on the inside and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to provide room for him and then Oscar steered inward and the contact was inevitable."

Post-Crash and Team Response

McLaren will review the incident with their racers but only after the race weekend. Both cars needed significant repairs before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on the weekend.

The team principal said: "Overall disappointed but we take it on the chin, we are now concentrating on repairing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."

"Our team holds a competitive place from our competitiveness point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to race, compete fairly and utilize our capabilities."

"Championship points are the key thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A bit more prudence would be beneficial for everyone."

Standings Impact

The sprint event was taken by the Max Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now 55 points behind Piastri and thirty-three adrift of the Briton.

The team boss said: "The implication is what the numbers show - we missed out on eight points with both racers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two strong racers. We look forward to just some standard competition."

The Red Bull driver said he was approaching the title race race by race.
