Study Reveals UK Government Officials Held Meetings With Fossil Fuel Lobbyists 500 Times During Initial Year of Government

According to fresh findings, government ministers met with delegates from the fossil fuel industry over 500 times in their first year in government – amounting to double per business day.

Marked Uptick Compared to Former Government

The study found that petroleum sector advocates were in attendance at 48% extra official discussions in the present administration's first year versus the year before.

Government Defense

Ministers supported the engagements, claiming that ministers engaged with a broad spectrum of delegates from "energy sector, unions and community groups to propel our clean energy major project".

Rising Worries About Industry Influence

However, the findings have raised concern among analysts about the extent of the petroleum industry's sway over officials at a period when leaders are striving to decrease expenses and transition to a more sustainable energy system.

Major Discoveries

The analysis, which is based on the official published record of ministerial meetings, also found:

  • Officials at the Net Zero Ministry met with petroleum sector advocates 274 times, with industry figures present at almost a quarter of discussions.

  • The climate official engaged with oil industry representatives 250 times – with 33% of all his meetings including sector representatives.

  • Throughout the equivalent duration government representatives held meetings with trade union representatives 61 times.

  • Multiple prominent oil corporations engaged with representatives 100 times between them.

  • Petroleum sector advocates were present at the majority of official session about the windfall tax, a interim charge on the "exceptional earnings" of marine energy corporations.

Political Reactions

A Green party MP commented: "Instead of heeding experts, residents affected by flooding, or families eager to secure a safe future for their future generations, this government is prioritising lobbyists and revenues for major petroleum companies."

Official Denial

The government maintained the results were "deceptive", stating numerous of the companies mentioned also had sustainable power initiatives and that such matters were typically the focus of the conversations.

"Our priority is a just, orderly and successful change in the marine area in line with our environmental and legal requirements, and we are cooperating with the industry to protect present and coming generations of decent work."

Wider Perspective

Several prominent petroleum industry giants have been criticised for reducing their green investments in recent times amid a international resistance against environmental measures.

An advocacy leader from an climate legal group remarked: "The government vowed a public-serving administration, but that shouldn't involve bowing the knee to businesses making money out of climate catastrophe. It's time to cease favoring climate-damaging entities and prioritize citizens."
