The Reze Arc Movie Dominates Domestic Box Office in Opening Weekend

Did Sony done it again? Following the box office performance of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned more than $600 million worldwide, the latest Chainsaw Man film has reached beyond the $100M mark globally, reaching a international earnings of over $108 million this weekend. This feature surpassed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its sophomore frame in theaters, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Strong American and Global Earnings

Helmed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It brought in $18.2 million in the U.S. after a strong $5.2M Saturday earnings and $4.5 million Sunday. Globally, the animated by MAPPA movie earned nearly $15 million across 46 global regions, bringing its global earnings to $60.4 million through Sony distribution ($43.1M overseas, $18.2M stateside). Sony has yet to announce its official box office total.

Comparisons to Other Blockbuster Anime Movies

Specialist agency an industry expert noted in prior discussions, contrasting the feature's anticipated earnings to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made thirty-four million dollars in the North America in 2022 and debuted with a nearly identical $18 million domestically. This movie's debut weekend aligns with that benchmark, while its $108 million worldwide total is now positioned slightly below that movie's over $166 million total earnings. Although it’s unlikely the Reze Arc movie will match the box office of blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a huge win for Sony.

Marketing Strategies Drive Box Office Dominance

Sony and its subsidiary the anime streaming service Crunchyroll have skillfully used community involvement to propel their dominance at the anime box office. This film's marketing campaign began at Anime Expo Los Angeles in July with a MAPPA presentation, unique experiences, and Pochita-themed pictures, then continued with a major presence at the New York Comic Con showcasing exclusive clips, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. Moreover, organizers held an exclusive fan screening for moviegoers and content creators as well after the last day of the gathering.

Looking Ahead

2025 stands as a big year for anime, and for the company, which has one more feature-length anime releasing this year in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
