The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in England's Ashes Team

The English team has opted for a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise place.

The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the first Test to decide whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s condition.

The other seamers complete the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner enters the starting XI.

Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted several previous Tests.

During these matches, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.

Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.

On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the more likely choice.

Alternative Choices Weighed

There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.

However McCullum has opted to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”

“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.

“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents come out and excel out here.”
