Torrential Precipitation Exacerbate Situation for Displaced Residents of Gaza, Officials Caution
Intense rains over the last seven days have intensified the precarious circumstances of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians in the territory, as stated by aid groups.
"Terrible" Weather Brings Serious Dangers
A spokesman characterized the recent storm as "awful", with downpours so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the terrain.
"The recent weather was truly horrendous for the residents. The heavy rains were so intense... And the winds were so strong," said the official.
Authorities voice grave worry that young ones living in makeshift shelters in soaked clothing will fall victim to hypothermia and additional ailments.
Casualties and Extensive Damage
Medical officials have confirmed that one baby has succumbed from the cold and no fewer than 11 other people have been killed in roof cave-ins due to the severe weather.
Additional accounts indicate a higher fatality count. Authorities reported that multiple structures had fully given way and dozens had collapsed partially.
- Almost 55,000 families impacted by the weather.
- More than 40 designated shelters submerged.
- Numerous individuals forced to find new shelter.
Assistance Efforts Considered Not Enough
Organizations have stepped up deliveries of tents, warm covers and clothes since the halt in hostilities commenced, but they stress there is still not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Agencies are working relentlessly to deliver that assistance and to allocate it, but the size of the needs is so enormous that we continue to see many thousands of people and children who are genuinely suffering nightly," cautioned one official.
Future Concerns and Ceasefire Provisions
The second phase of the ceasefire encompasses arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the removal of troops, and other terms.
Aid bodies have highlighted the necessity for "expanded and ongoing aid to meet urgent and long-term needs."
The war was initiated by an assault in the autumn of 2023. Later campaigns have resulted in a substantial number of lives lost in the region, as per health ministry data.
