Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
