During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison forged from the memories of Vecna. The search for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's childhood—a moment that may just hold the means to overcome him once and for all.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

After locating Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the act went deeper than a simple act of survival.

Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the live show The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a warship into a dimension later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is understood of his research, the case almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the container could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he battles the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in the past.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to fortify himself.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the series finale to come.
