During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
